I loved this book. Metcalf was my sixth grade teacher! Amazing story. He was a foreboding presence when I was 11 years old. Now with adult eyes, I see so much more; I can see through his eyes the experience that shaped him.
Nice vamp tale… the sub crew and deep dark ocean give the story an unsettling setting.

The story was written in, and takes place in, the 80’s, during the Cold War. It’s interesting hearing the tale from that decade and perspective. It’s a decent listen. I like when my “cheap horror fiction” teaches me things like how a submarine runs, what life is like for the men aboard, and new military..

The changes in dynasties mixed with foreign making is hard to keep up with, the ching to the ming, the wu, etc… but if you pay attention to the overall flow of Chinese history it’s incredible how prevalent the confuscionist outlook still is in the PRC.
