Ok first off- the recording quality is poor. The reader has a lovely voice but the accents she uses for characters would randomly change mid-speech as if the production team was clipping together different takes. Also, lines were often repeated (I checked to see if the Audible app was skipping or buffering- it wasn’t. They just forgot to edit multiple takes out).
As for the story- this book is filled with many “yikes” moments. I get that the author is trying to tell the story of a young girl growing up in a difficult environment, but she makes the “hero” of the story an adult man forming an inappropriate relationship. An attempt is made to manipulate the reader into siding with the abuser while simultaneously calling the rightfully concerned family member crazy. That being said, the writing style itself is clear and consistent with great imagery. It’s just very difficult to appreciate that when the story is so graphically repulsive.
