I have had plenty of my favorite books ruined by bad narration. However, this is the first time, that the narration was so spot on that not only was it just amazing to listen too, it also 100% changed how I felt about a book that I had originally marked as DNF on my kindle. When I first read Black Balled, I believe I only made it to chapter 8. It wasn’t the writing or even the story that turned me off. It was the two main characters, who both come off as arrogant a-holes. Now, the audiobook didn’t magically change my opinion of the two MCs, they were still unattractively arrogant, but what it did do, was make them vulnerable and real too. Suddenly, I found myself liking them and even rooting for Troy, and Larson. I wanted to see what made them the way they were and more importantly, I wanted to see them happy together, and this book delivered both. I also really loved the bonus chapters. I think I could have listened to the whole book from Muffy and Ida’s point of view and loved it just as equally. Joel Leslie is awesome as always and who knew he could pull off an actual cat so well. While I loved Ida and Muffy, I really wanted to smack Lloyd, so now I’m excited to start book 2, because if book 1 is any indication, this author has a gift at making unlikeable characters remarkably redeemable and that’s a ride I’m up for any day. P.S. I should also mention, I went back and read the ebook (you know the one I marked as DNF) and it is marked as a favorite.
