It felt like Hays got bored and decided to experiment. Sort of Southern, but inconsistently so. He narrated thoughts on different voices even though they were the same character. Really took me out of the story, which had some glaring inconsistencies, with mice going into the same pocket multiple times without exiting, hp bouncing all around, and some people making the same activities because the author forgot that he had them do it the sentence before. It was a good start for a story and an interesting idea, but this wasn’t polished enough to be published.
