It’s rare that we get LitRPG with a non-humanoid protagonist! And being an ant monster among men is certainly an interesting premise, unfortunately the execution of this intriguing idea falls a little flat on its face in Chrysalis. Especially towards the ending of the story when the involvement of the humans is completely dropped entirely.

Spoiler Warning:

But one severe plot hole that I felt should have been addressed was: why didn’t Anthony tell the Queen about the presence of humans so close to the colony? In previous chapters the humans moving further and further into the dungeon seemed like a significant problem that Anthony was worried about, yet for whatever reason he seems to completely forget about it as soon as he gains the ability to actually communicate with his fellow ants. In fact, the last half of the book there is no mention of the humans, nor does the POV switch at all during the final chapters.

I’m hoping that in the next book we’ll have a chance to see Anthony actually attempt to make some kind of contact with the humans of this world on behalf of his growing colony, for better or for worse.
