I was voluntarily provided this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator. This book was great! It was fun and I was disappointed when it was over, I wanted more! The author does such a great job, making the villain the main character but he’s not your typical villain. This villain, Jackson, is full of snark and disdain for the other realms he has dealings with. He considers most villains stupid and he’s right. They always do stupid things and let the heroes win and he consults them, filling them in on where they’re going wrong and where they can change so they can actually win against the heroes. When he finds himself trapped in a realm with little magical power, he has to use his brains and knowledge of how the fantasy realms work to get out of the situation, manipulating everyone he needs to, feeling no remorse. At first, you think you’ll end up hating Jackson but the more you get into the story, the more you agree with him and want him to win. It’s so much fun seeing these tropes from the villain’s side, listening to him as he breaks the fourth wall and the sprinkling of pop culture references just add to the experience. The narrator, Mr. Kafer, is the perfect voice for Jackson. The right amount of snark in his voice towards the heroes, the right enough disdain when telling with the villains of the worlds. Both Mr. Kafer and Mr. Gibson make you smile and even laugh at more than one spot. If you’re tired of the typical fantasy tropes and want a new, very fun take on them, this is the book for you. I just hope there’s a second book, I really want to see more of this world.
