I’ve come to realize two things. First, Blaise Corvin is one bad grass mo-fo of a writer. He can weave a tale that makes you never want to put the book down. If his stories were a meal, I’d suck the morrow from the bones. Yeah, that’s right, he doesn’t serve any salad! This man is a meat and taters kind of writer. Quick, witty, action, adventure, danger and intrigue, with a dash of utter coolness is his style. Secondly, Jeff Hays is the man I want to read my obit. His voice is so flexible he makes plastic man look like a quadrapalegic. His soothing sounds are like an aged bourbon and a light jazz riff. The man can do any kind of voice you want, Male, female, cat, even dog! I do not exaggerate. He adds such a flair to whatever he reads it only elevates the material. If his voice were a building it’d be the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.
Secret of the Old Ones mixes Lovecraftian material with fantasy, and steampunk, and it does so effortlessly. The characters are sharp, and not dull witted dunces that react rather than act. The world setting is atmospheric and makes you want to visit.
What is the one drawback to this book you ask? Why, it ended! There should have been more of this than there was, so I have to say Blaise listens to the addage that you should always leave them wanting more. Read this book, if for no other reason than the big boss fight at the end which is super funny and action packed. He couldn’t have packed any more action into if he had a bag of holding!!
