What a delightfully fun book! I was suffering from a book hangover after finishing the latest in an urban fantasy series and hunting around for something to grip my attention. This did the trick. It’s got that wonderful mix of humor and serious moments that had me chuckling out loud.

Told from the viewpoint of William England, we learn about life as a kid of a famous spree killer. William and his sister Carrie have spent some quality time in an insane asylum but now are enjoying their freedom. At least until a shared inner voice, the Spirit of the Hunt, cheers William on as he finds his preferred kind of prey – evil serial killers.

And even as William comes to this revelation, he meets the woman who may just be the one. He’s never felt attraction before and the feeling is very odd, and a little frightening, for him. Nancy has special abilities of her own. She’s an Artemis, coming from a line of Artemises; they hunt spree killers like William’s evil dad. Right from the start, fate has set them at odds. Yet they both are of the opinion to give the other a chance.

Meanwhile William’s sister Carrie provides a lot of comedic relief and says a lot of the things my inner immature dork is thinking. lol Carrie made me laugh out loud so many times! She’s got her twisted dark side but she’s also an animal lover, so don’t you dare even think of kicking her dog! I also like her immediate enslavement of a moody vampire they happen upon.

It’s quickly decided they need to take out a pack of spoiled rich kids that have ceremonial hunts (hunting humans) but there’s plenty of obstacles thrown in their way. So it’s not a straight line and I love how William and Nancy learn to trust each other and join forces to kick butt.

I’ve never been a fan of those slasher movies but after reading this book, I think I should go watch some of the classics and laugh along as I imagine William and Nancy would do. If you need some humor in your life, but you’re a bit dark and twisted, then this is probably the book for you. 5/5 stars.

The Narration: Jeffrey Kafer is always fun to hear. He’s narrated a lot of Phipps’s books and I always look forward to having him in my ear. Once again, he gives an enthusiastic performance. I loved his voice for Carrie, especially how he delivers so many of her lines with a straight face. That really added to the humor as so many things Carrie says are way out there or inappropriate in some way. The pacing was good and there were no tech issues with the recording. 5/5 stars.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. My opinions are 100% my own.
