I have known about and listened to interviews with Randy Lanier for years. I knew a lot of the story but only at the surface level. This book puts his experiences and life into an entirely new context. The details he goes into regarding his smuggling activities and their expansion over time are amazing. Tie that in with his racing experience and ambition and the book gets even more interesting.
The only thing that took away from the Audiobook was some of the narration. The Narrator did a great job with the text, and his intonation is similar to the author’s. However, his lack of knowledge specifically around the Motorsports aspects of the book does show. If you are not a big motorsports fan, skip this part you won’t notice and will love the story. If you are a motorsports fan you’ll love it too but parts may drive you a little crazy. The narrator frequently mispronounces racing terms, driver names, organizing bodies, car manufacturers, etc. I’m being really nit-picky here. Things like IMSA the narrator spelled out every time I-M-S-A instead of pronouncing Em-Sa. There are probably 200 references to IMSA in the book so you will notice. Other ones that I remember are Tom Sneva and Lola.
It’s a minor thing and should not discourage anyone from getting the Audible Book.
