An awesome introduction to the series, the narrator, and LitRPG
4.5 stars
Okay, so this is not really my introduction to LitRPG. But it’s an awesome example of the genre, and I was highly entertained throughout. I used to watch my husband play RPG games all the time (not so much now because I don’t have the time), and this has many of the elements of classic RPG games. But what makes this such an entertaining book is that it has a solid storyline, lots of humor, and enough action/boss fights to keep you guessing. Based on the fact that there are now six books, I KNOW that Carl and Donut will survive, but who will make it with them?
The narrator is absolutely amazing and I had to look up some YouTube videos of him doing the narration to convince myself he was doing all the voices. In particular, I love Princess Donut’s voice, but Carl’s voice also fits perfectly well with his character.
I discovered this series on Reddit, and I kept getting recommendations for this series, but just wasn’t sure. While I love fantasy, LitRPG is a niche genre and I wasn’t sure if I would love this. But after getting recommendation after recommendation, I decided to give it a try. In the first chapter I found myself giggling out loud. When Princess Donut started talking, I was hooked. For those who may not be familiar with RPG games, you may be confused by all the talk of stats, achievements, and loot boxes, but with Jeff Hays’ narration, it’s so easy to go with the flow.
I am now officially hooked and have already gotten the 2nd book. Looking forward to it!
