I had to push myself to finish this one. I really wanted to like it more. It’s got an interesting premise and asks some very good questions. I enjoyed the Christian bent to it (so many sci-fi go the other way that this made for an interesting divergence, and hey, I am Christian after all). I just felt meh about it, though. I always think it will be interesting to read from the perspective of the “baddie” but when I do I usually dislike it. I wanted more backstory for this bad guy. I found it daunting to listen to him when I had no real basis for his motivations and actions. Meanwhile the “good guy” had TOO much backstory. Marine, pastor, gamer, pop culture expert…the pastors in small churches tend to have way too much on their plates to also be men (people) of the world. The side-character playing the lackey to the bad guy went from the most annoying to the most likeable for me. The narrators did a good job and it was nice having 2 voices to easily distinguish the 2 main characters. Side note: I pictured Chadwick Boseman as the pastor and then later he makes a joke that Boseman would play him in a movie! So that was fun. I finished the story, but considered returning it about 2 hours in. There are worse ways to waste time though, so it still gets 3 stars.
