The protagonist is both a clever choice and a relatable character. The conceit of a character who has seen the end of the world after a very long life being sent back in time to stop that apocalypse helps to justify the power and choices of the character.

The world is an interesting one, in that it seems to be a giant dungeon, but there are hints that there are fundamental secrets to be discovered. Further, there are various characters who touch the story and seem to be foreshadowing for future events.

The story is told in first-person limited, but there are occasional drops into the heads of other characters in the story. I’m not a huge fan of that, as it took me out of the story a bit. This is worst in the afterword, where we get tiny vignettes of many other characters who seem as if they will be obstacles in future volumes of the story.
