This was a surprising good “listen”. I became aware of this series by watching Ward Carroll’s YOUTUBE channel. He was a back seater in a F14 Tomcat and has many good stories about his time in the Navy, which he tells very well.
I liked the mix of seriousness and humor in the story. The scene of the high level teleconference with the SECDEF, a whole host of flag rank officer and the carrier crew and the problems with teleconference technology was too true and priceless! I also liked the way the author sets up the conflict amongst his characters and then how most of them were able to put their conflicts aside to accomplish the mission.
The flying sequence successfully conveyed the “pucker factor” of the aircrews who find themselves in very challenging situations. The author excels in describing the “turning and burning” fighter combat.
The narration was good and added to the story.
Over all, it was very good listen and I found myself regretting it being over too soon. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a realistic Naval Aviation thriller.
