The underlying humanity and compassion that Carl has is what makes all the violence almost meaningful instead of meaningless. No worries-there are plenty of funny moments alleviating the trauma.
I’ve only just read the first book and my hopes for the series is that somehow the horrible society in which Carl finds himself, is revolutionized in the end.
