The writer cannot make it more than a paragraph or two without lamenting the tragic loss of Karla Brown’s beauty. No description of her, or reference to her, is without the word “pretty.” It really makes me wonder if any of the men who worked to solve this case would have cared at all about Karla Brown’s murder if she had been ugly.
The fact that this case was largely solved with junk science like lie detectors and bite mark analysis, as well as hearsay, is also bothersome. It’s just not interesting to hear these outdated methods described as new and exciting (though it’s understandable given when it was written).
Also, and it’s so common with these audio books but really grating, is that the male narrator takes on this weird effeminate voice when reading the dialog of women. Nobody talks like that. Just stop.
