This is the third book I’ve listened to by this author and I enjoyed this continuation of Book 2 (in which Davina was one of the leading characters). This story mostly follows Davina’s son as he goes off to war. The characters are still a bit idealistic and although they have some rough moments most things fall together pretty easily. That’s not to say there is not any tragedy, but the book still has a very “ride off into the sunset” feel.
I liked the way music was incorporated in a bit of a different way this time, by looking at the therapeutic side of music.
The book has two main storylines, Max and his friend Colin, and two girls Chantelle and Sam. The girls (in school with the intent of becoming doctors) enlisted as medics. Eventually their stories merge.
The author again narrates her book. She is a good narrator and has a wonderful array of accents but her cadence changes. When she is narrating the plot, she does it with inflections or pauses put where one would not normally in speech. When narrating what a character says, she switches and does very well. It’s the difference between reading a story and relating a story, the effect is the difference between listening to the tale and being submersed in it.
The audio quality is not that great. It sounds tinny. At least this time the audio quality was consistent.
There is no excessive violence. There is swearing. Mostly just the “f” word when the son is writing in his journal. It is not throughout the book or overly excessive. There is one sex scene and it is mildly described.
