I will start off by saying this book was extremely well written, and had a lot of potential. The characters were very compelling and it provided insight into the rougher side of what some children and families go through. In the beginning I loved the relationship between Kellan and Wavy, since he was introduced as a protective father figure. It made you hopeful that there could be an escape for Wavy from her traumatic upbringing. But as soon as this relationship turned romantic/sexual, it became a very troubling story. Not only does the age difference between them scream blatant pedophilia, but a sexually experienced adult pursuing an abused and naive child starving for love can only be described as predatorial. It was also concerning that the family and observers of this relationship were painted as the antagonists for disapproving and alerting authorities. This book could have been so much more fulfilling (and in my opinion would have taken very little from the plot) if Kellan had done the right thing and waited until Wavy was legal before pursuing her sexually, or if he was written as a much younger character. This plot choice can not and should not feel acceptable or be defended, and it is concerning to me how many people romanticized it. If this story was taken out of the fictional realm and brought into reality, I would hope folks would see it as the disturbing situation of an older adult taking advantage of a broken child that it is.
