There are a lot of romance novels, where there isn’t enough story happening to be interesting. There are a lot of romance novels where a love interest is intentionally designed to be super unlikable in the beggining so he can mellow out and be more likable at the end. There are a lot of bad romance novels. To be honest, with a pen name like Nikki Sex, I completely expected this to be like that. I was expecting overly titillating and underdeveloped characters, and a laughable plot. It’s good to be wrong sometimes.

I love a good romance novel, it’s often hard to find good ones though as the market gets saturated with weak and clumsy attempts. This is one of the best first books in a romance series I have had the pleasure of listening to.

The main character is fully developed and has a real personality, motivations, goals and fears, her backstory is doled out over the course of the book in a way that fits seamlessly into the narrative.

Our primary love interest is only a bit abrasive, and is equally well developed as a character, the romantic tension and personal give and take between them feels pretty genuine. It’s hard to convey chemistry between two characters in a way that doesn’t seem clunky, but it is very well done here.

The plot was a huge surprise. It is rare to see such a well written story in a paranormal romance novel. There were several small plots that wound together very well to make a singular whole.

The sex, I would have expected the sex to be a bit more explicit. They were more metaphor and romance than I was expecting. I don’t dislike either approach to sex scenes, but again from the authors name I assumed they would have played out more pornographic

The only real flaws in this book were some odd mispronunciation from the narrator, there were just a couple of words she pronounced wrong repeatedly. The one that really sticks is “heady” she keeps saying “hee-dee”.

This is my first book by Nikki Sex and I have to say I am quite impressed I’ll be looking forward to future installments of this series.
