I’ve been waiting for this book to come out since I finished Prime Evil, which is kind of like the prequel to this series. This book definitely didn’t disappoint! If you like stories involving space Marines along the lines of Starship Troopers (with a twist), you’re going to love this series.
Marine Corporal Goshawk is sent with a group of other Marines to find and rescue the missing SEAL team from Prime Evil. What follows is a fast-paced story of action, adventure and the struggle to become something more. You don’t have to read Prime Evil for this story to make sense, but I highly recommend it. Prime Evil was a high-octane ride that sets up some of the background to this story. You get enough of the info to not be lost in this book (and some explanations to some of the things in Prime Evil), but you do miss out on a lot of fun and extra content.
I really liked Goshawk and his fireteam. They’re kind of the misfits of the Marine deployment and form a bond over that. Most of the story centers around Goshawk and his team, so there’s not a lot to say about the other characters, but they’re done well. The story is a good size, but feels like a quicker read thanks to all of the fast-paced action. I won’t spoil the ending, but it sets up book 2 nicely. It’s a bit of a cliffhanger (although not a jarring ending), but if you love this book as much as I did, you’ll be reading book 2 anyways.
Primal Link is another great example of Justin Sloan’s work. Lots of action and great characters. I’ve not read any other books by L. Bowers, but I’ll be checking them out now. I loved the story and am looking forward to seeing where things go with the rest of the series. There’s a lot more fun and action ahead!
For the audiobook performance, Gary Bennett does a great job. The narration was easy to listen to and I was able to stay immersed in the story. I’d definitely recommend checking it out for fans of audiobooks.
