The story has a novel an interesting premise, but man it’s difficult to get into it because of the writing. This character is contradictory at best. He’s both meek and strong willed which makes no sense the way they flip-flop but my biggest critique is that the character the main protagonist is written in a way so that the story has no effect on him. My example is this: in the book, he has a decision to make which side he will choose at one point he is talking to the power of the shadow and he comes to the conclusion that he doesn’t want the dark or the shadow equally, which makes no sense throughout the entire story. He has been hounded, abused, tortured murdered, name called by the Darkside nothing but antagonistic towards him. The shadow has been nothing but helpful to him , so for the character to say such a stupid thing like I don’t want either one of them equally… It’s fine if the author wants the character to go their own unique way that’s fine but at least make it makes sense in the story have him choose to do neither, but have him explain that if he had to choose, he would definitely go with the shadow the people who haven’t tortured him or wanted to kill him, but for him to say, he wouldn’t choose either one of them equally , the character was written divorced from the story itself. The author has determined which way he wants the character to go and the story is just something that happens around him that has very little if any effect on the characters progression, that is weird. Also, characters have knowledge they shouldn’t, like they just got to the dungeon with no memories and yet they know stuff when it’s convenient to progress the story.
