I’ve read a lot of environmental fiction, and nothing I’ve come across grapples with climate change in such a comprehensive, hopeful manner. Is it a bit outlandish in parts? Sure. Oversimplified? Probably. But it sparks conversation and bold imagination on nearly every sub-category of climate change. Migration, finance, geo-engineering, vigilantism… it’s ALL on the table.
It certainly has its particular philosophies baked in. Good chances you’ll disagree with at least some of what you’re hearing; I wasn’t on board with every little thing, but it’s certainly still fiction – complex, challenging, up-for-interpretation fiction. Frankly, this would make for a great book club or seminar class read.
I may be pre-disposed to this kind of wonky, near-future sci-fi; I also spend a lot of time thinking about climate change. So… I may just be a part of the niche target audience. That being said, if you have any interest in this book, I think it’s worth the shot. It’s probably somewhat niche… but It’s still fairly approachable for most readers.
