Sammy Scott’s At Home With the Horrors was one of the best horror short story collections I’ve ever read, so I was expecting BETA to be great. It was so much more than great. First of all, the narration was so spot on. The story structure, the number of times Scott flipped my perception of what I thought was happening, his beautiful way of writing, the deeply drawn characters that feel so real, including the non-human ones (oh, Ezra…), and that ending… it was sublime. As far as I’m concerned, Sammy Scott has joined the pantheon of all-time horror greats, and BETA has become one of my favorite horror reads of all time.
