I like paranormal/fantasy romance–a guilty pleasure, like cotton candy–and I really wanted to like this book. I just couldn’t. I could not connect to the characters with any sustainable level of sympathy.
Everything that the bad guys did or attempted to do to the main character Abby, the alien love interest does to her, sometimes even more aggressively than the bad guys.
Rather than being upset at being treated the same, Abby hates the bad guys but loves when her alien does them (sometimes immediately after the bad guys try it).
The entire alien character could be a case study for an abusive romantic partner. Sex scenes are stilted, and “softly” snd “gently” are grossly overused.
I don’t mean to imply that the book has no redeeming qualities; it is decent “fluff” as long as you know what you are getting.
I am not really recommending the book/series, but I am not saying it’s something to avoid at all costs, either.
