- Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
- Yes, and I did.
- Any additional comments?
- This books starts out so unbelievably strong. Having the protagonists prepper grandmother deliver words of life and survival wisdom through pre-written letters was brilliant.
The authors humor is excellent, and the writing style is easy to read.
Where things started to come off the rails a bit was with the love story. It’s clear that had the focus remained on the prepping, survival, mystery treasure and terrorist threat, the book would have been the best prepping fiction ever written, and I don’t make that statement lightly.
Sadly, the author knew he had to fill out the pages to make it a series, so he added pointless love stories and silly drama. That is a major flaw that I hope it’s avoided in future books.
Minor issues:
It’s really difficult to tell how much time has passed between events. You don’t know if it’s been days, weeks or months since the collapse. It’s also pretty unbelievable that a mother/teenage daughter combo without preparations or training can survive in the woods alone. Now granted, the protagonist does help them out eventually, but there’s a very feminist, “I can do everything a man can do” attitude that neither noble nor believable in a SHTF environment.
Bottom line:
5 stars across the board, because I want to encourage the author and have more people buy the book. In reality, the story is a 5 star start and a 2 star ending. Hoping the 2nd book will return back to the main reason the author started writing the story.
