This is mostly a complaint for the guest narrator “The Critical Drinker”. Its a DCC book, the story was fun and a great time. No problem there. But why the hell was the guest narrator necessary? Jeff Hays has been great and shows an outstanding ability to differentiate the characters and give them emotion/depth. The critical drinker however fell flat as a performance being quite flat and unemotional. The only thing he provided was a solid Scottish accent which frankly I’m not giving him points for since he is already Scottish… Sounded a little too much like a Scot just reading off a script. Additionally, felt almost virtue signally to include the Critical Drinker in the audiobook like Matt was to get some of TCD’s audience into the series. Idk about that obviously but it just feels like it was a dude being like “hey bro wanna voice a character in my book” despite being a garbage voice actor. Plus The Critical Drinker, in my opinion, is just a massive asshole so that also rubbed me the wrong way too. Long story short, good book, 90% great performance, but leave assholes out of the book and save the voice acting work to actual talented voice actors
