Post-apocatyptic stories seem to be my go-to genre at the moment. I requested and received a free review copy of this audiobook to help feed my obsession. This is my voluntary review.

‘Turbulent’, the first book of the ‘Days of Want’ series centers on Maddie, an 18-year-old college student stranded at Chicago O’Hare Airport after an EMP strikes most of the USA. She quickly realizes that she needs to leave the city and find a safer place. There are shifting POVs with her brother and mother as they attempt to make it back home after the event. As would be expected, society starts to break down practically immediately. How will these family members handle being alone in this situation? Will they be able to find each other again?

The action gets going pretty quickly and doesn’t let up throughout the book. It offers the reader/listener a fast-paced suspense/thriller. The main characters have long distances to travel to get home. We see the challenges they face while trying to find safety and each other. Along the way we meet good people and evil people. It’s a well-told story of the immediate effects of a national disaster and how prepared people are to deal with it.

Narration by Kevin Pierce is really great as well. He does a nice job making each voice unique. He gives the story a sense of the urgency that the text conveys.

I’m looking forward to listening to the entire series.

Highly recommended.
