All books with Kevin Pierce are enjoyable, the best narrator of all time in my opinion! The only thing better than his narration was the story line. My husband, a former Marine, loved the accurate Marine references and the story line as a whole. I was pleased to see a strong female protagonist in the front ranks of Boyd’s characters. The character depth was there and the interactions of the characters were natural and realistic. At one point I caught myself thinking “I want to be friends with them”. Overall fantastic read! My only criticism, after having spent years in Afghanistan is: Afghani is their form of currency, the name of their money. An “Afghan” is a person from Afghanistan. Also, I understand there was 1 reference to “new MRE’s that weren’t that bad”, but a lot of references to older MRE’s…. I’m not sure how old is “old” but the ones I consumed in the early 2010’s were amazing compared to the ones in the late 1990’s (and those would be 30 years old… which seems a little unlikely that “most” MRE’s would taste like cardboard. I certainly wouldn’t go to a restaurant and order one, but occasionally they were better than what was served at the DFAC. THAT SAID, those things are super minor and the ONLY THINGS I could nit-pick to give a fair review of both the good and “bad”. I’d recommend this to everyone, and what a deal on the boxed set! The surprise ending was my favorite part!
