I chose this book because I enjoyed The Book Woman of Troubled Creek by the same author. I actually had a false start with this book, listening to maybe the first couple of hours and then abandoning it to read and listen to others because it didn’t at first grab my attention. I am very glad I gave it another try. Told from the perspective of a teenage girl, the story unfolded beautifully on the second try. Many characters from past generations were weaved in to deepen the development of the central characters and the town in which they lived. I’ve never been to Kentucky, and I can’t say this book makes me want to go, lol, but I came to care about Muddy and Bobby and their love for their families and their conflict to honor deep roots while moving Peckinpaw into the enlightened modern world.
