Winifred “Fred” Page and her Corgi, Watson, move to Colorado after her life in Kansas City is turned upside down. As an experienced teacher and book editor, she decides to open a bookstore in her new Colorado town. However, within a few days of moving she discovers a murder victim in her shop and her family members are on the person of interest list.
I’m drawn to books with characters that have strong back stories, complex personalities, and interesting motivation. I love that Fred is starting over despite her losses. I’m sure she’ll develop and grow in coming stories. Since I have two dogs of my own, I love that Watson is her constant companion. (And what’s cuter than a corgi!) Fred’s parents are care-free hippies. The cast of characters is well rounded and fun.
Personally, I had a hard time with the prominence of marijuana. I don’t know the laws in Colorado regarding medical use vs. recreational use, so some parts of the story weren’t clear.
Fred is a 38-year-old woman. The narrator sounds like she’s in her 20s.
