Maybe I’m just listening to too many romance novels lately but it felt like something was missing in this book but I just can’t seem to put my finger on it. Val was a little bit of an average antihero for someone like myself that has read soooo many dark romances and mafia romance books, and he had the typical tragic backstory and soft side we expect at some point. There was something that got lost for me throughout the book… Val just seemed to become TOO soft for my liking and some things just weren’t believable enough for me. First of all, I understood keeping Brody alive but Val didn’t even really seem to care about the betrayal, even after getting Eden back. Eden turned out to be a bada** which is awesome, but at the same time, I felt bored when she gave her half-a**ed resistance to being with Val for two months before caving. It just all felt like it fell into place with such ease… but again, there’s still something else and I just can’t determine what it is right now. I might be a little too critical and I did like the book, but I’m not sure yet if I’m going to listen to/read the rest of the series. The narration was excellent though, as usual from these narrators. I didn’t understand why they used three people with two men to narrate. I expected an epic love triangle or something, but nope. It was odd that they chose to do that rather than just have one narrator do the voices of all the men in the story. Either way, I would recommend this one to someone that really likes their dark mafia romance but not to someone that’s looking for something fresh and outside the typical box.
