Edward Wright is offered incredible power at a terrible cost. Enter the world of Ivalis, where Ed is a Dungeon Lord and plans to be one of the good guys fighting against evil. Little does Ed know that the title of Dungeon Lord has its own reputation despite Ed’s best intentions.
It’s always a good thing when the MC of a story has wits and guts to gain the edge in a story, but I feel Edward does not get a chance to rise to power in this book. Sure, he gets some unique abilities, but mostly he is just fighting to live to the next day. Ed never even has time to make a half decent dungeon. At times, when the story managed to keep my attention, I found I liked the bad guys more then Edward. Two things that I enjoy about this book is the eldritch horror theme of the new world, and the very horrifying enemy Edward is fighting.
Jeff Hays is definitely the right narrator for this book, and Annie Ellicott supplements him very well. One thing that bothered me is how the spider queens audio is too high pitched and extra loud. I get what they were trying to do to make them sound very alien to the ear, but it ended up just being annoying. Other then that issue (which is not so bad in book 2) the audio performance was very good.
