All of our characters are socially dysfunctional and not in an amusing way. There is an early scene where a quest leads them into a brothel and the author attempts to describe a funny scenario–at least I think it’s supposed to be funny–based on the embarrassment of our characters to be in such a place. While it might have been funny if our characters were, say, 13, being in their late 20s it was more sad than funny. This focus on their social anxiety continues late into the book to the point where I’m thinking about quitting with 6 hours remaining. I’m not sure why the author focuses on this thread; maybe he intends to rehabilitate them all? Or maybe he thinks this is normal behavior? I dunno, but it’s a miscalculation, because I’m not invested enough in the characters to find out.
