This litrpg has very little of what drew me into the series, there are no cool new items, no cool new city building, no cool new summons. All it seems to be is to throw like 40 roadblocks in front of Jason… pause for a couple chapters of wheedling, half stepping, stuttering teeny bopper “romance”… then throw in a few more roadblocks to Jason’s success.
As I stated above Jim Butcher also treats his characters to some pretty brutal situations, but it all makes sense. It all has a purpose. There is a payoff via development of his powers and his character. But Butcher uses a scalpel to do this, and Bagwell is content with beating his character like the proverbial dead horse.
Where’s his reward? Litrpgs are tailor made to give huge payoffs to the character. I see all this tedium and wonder where is the payoff? Why the mediocre morality plays and existentialism? Why the romcom teenager drama that is clubbed over our heads for 20 hours?
In conclusion, this book is frustrating. Stick to litrpg basics first and foremost. Loot, xp, city building, and party play.
Also, why make a minmaxing minion based necromancer into some lame staff wielding… dark magic warrior. Necromancer is literally what drives people to this series, not the umpteenth magic warrior that seems to litter every other litrpg.
