This book had all the complexity of an Anne Perry novel, but none of the excessive angst which so pervades Perry novels. This book was more thoughtful, and more devious than a typical “cozy” mystery, but like a cozy, it was not saturated with descriptions of gore, although there was murder, mayhem, prostitution, philandering, betrayal and spying! It was definitely packed with humans running amuck. Even so, I had a great time listening to it, and absolutely delighted in the young Bow Street Runner finding his way amongst all that glittering, deceptive society to the truths that they were hiding. This book gets a 100 percent approval rating from me … the author, the narrator, the story, the characters, the believability — all perfect. I’m so pleased to know there are more books in the series. I rate this author among the female authors of the Golden Age of mysteries — if you like Agatha Christie, Margery Allingham, Dorothy Sayers, Ngaio Marsh, you’ll like this book.
