This is my first exposure to this author and what a fun listen; made amazing by the talented Joel Leslie. This is the story of the “courtship” of Lionel and Dog. I say the courtship because the story is really about labels and coming to terms with who you are versus what society thinks you should be. The MCs “hook up” at the very beginning. But a series of misunderstandings and miscommunications, they constantly break up and get together again. During this, each man makes judgements and assumptions about the other. There are also family pressures and external jerks that make it harder for the couple. The interesting aspect is the tension within the gay male community about “femme” guys versus “straight acting” guys. Like any other community, there are prejudices. The author’s humor and Joel Leslie’s excellent performance keeps the listener engaged and wanting these guys to pull their heads out. This is tricky because you will want to smack each of them across the head at some point. It is a HFN ending and I would love to revisit the guys down the road to see if it stuck.
