I stumbled across Unsouled when perusing fantasy books that were included with my audible plus subscription. It was my first time reading anything by Will Wight and also my first listening experience with Travis Baldree as a narrator. I was pleasantly surprised by both and immediately proceeded to download the next 8 books in the series and burned through them like black flame. I originally gave this book four stars, but after listening to book two, I changed my vote. It just took the first book to get warmed up.

The characters in this series are hilarious and Will Wight’s take on magic and personal evolution in this series is unique and interesting.

It’s rare that I want to hear about the same characters for this many books. But due to the evolution of those involved and the storyline broadening, it doesn’t get old. While this series is more lighthearted and less epic, other authors who have hooked me in this way are Michael J Sullivan and Robin Hobb. If you’re familiar with them, then you know it’s high praise.

Also, way to go Travis Baldree!! I now officially have a second favorite narrator. Sorry Travis, even you can’t compare with Tim Gerard Reynolds. It used to be there was Tim and then there was everyone else. Tim’s in another league. Now he has some competition!

All in all, this is a fabulous, fun, lighthearted, easy listen/read and worth every moment. I’m stoked to dig in to The Elder Empire Sea/Shadow Trilogies while I wait for Cradle 10! Because who else is going to write two parallel trilogies that you read side by side?! (Insert mind-blown emoji here)
