The author has the main characters alternate between god-like omnipotence and knowledge and utter uselessness according to the needs of his plot. He’s like a bad game master that’s given his players items that are too powerful and then has to heap on ever more outrageous situations on them to challenge them.
On top of that, I second the the others about the constant emo vibe caused by characters not talking, and the lack of plot advancement for a book of this length.
