This book is pleasantly short. The ending is final, and although a follow up book could be written, this is a complete story. There are not any long drawn out passages of near misses or see-saw rescue attempts. I enjoyed the characters, and I feel their interactions were true to a stressful situation where people who don’t know each other are thrown together.
The story begins in an inclinator, in the Luxor hotel, where the five main characters are trapped. We follow them as they escape and attempt to navigate out of the city and travel to a point suggested in a text message. Which, is of course, easier said than done.
My only issue with the story are the contradictions as far as other survivors or better yet, lack thereof. One example is: a passage would say there was no one around, then that there were lots of people on the outside of town (would make sense for some to be there), then the characters were outside town and a passage again mentions no one else is around. The story focuses on the main characters and their interactions. They have very little contact with other survivors.
I’ve listened to one other book narrated by Kevin Pierce. The narrator did an excellent job on this one too. He voiced the female character well and had distinct voices for the male characters. He brought their personalities out well and made good use of accents. I would listen to another book by this narrator again.
There is not any explicit sex or excessive swearing or violence. There is an almost rape scene.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and voluntarily left this unbiased review.
