This series started out pretty good with the premise of someone from another world awaking in a fantasy world. It introduced a cultivation system where people and monsters have power levels. There was some light romance and exploration of the world.
However, as I went on reading it revealed traditional races of elves, humans, and dwarfs. Similarly magic is based on water, earth, fire, and wind. This is contrasted with the old world of the main character which has kings fighting with swords, but also the existence of things like elevators and steam engines. Rather strange.
Reading books 1-4 it seems they weren’t written as separate books, but chapters somewhat arbitrarily joined together. The books either just stop or just end on annoying cliffhangers.
I did not like the brutality and graphic violence where I could skip 60 seconds ahead in the audio and still be listening to the author describing someone’s excruciating death or immense pain. More and more of such content seems to be added as the series progresses.
Finally, the last section of the book just dragged on and it became hard to follow what exactly was going on because of all the different points of views being used to describe the same events. I’ve decided not to continue this series as I’ve lost interest in what happens next. I will instead wait for the next book in the Cradle series by Will Wight. The Cradle series is also a cultivation saga, but is better thought out, more refined, and more original.
