I’m committed to this series, and unfortunately this one came off as filler to me in comparison to other adventures. It makes up for it in the second half but the first is a slow ride.

SPOILERS
The first half centers around a heist of sorts. at the time of writing this review were at the stage of heists being very played out. The author I’m guessing at the time wanted in on the action but upon my reading it you can spot all the classic beats of the story.

it makes up for it in the second half after the very heavy handed foreshadowing of something going wrong and someone’s betrayal. all sensible moves but I’m this case, it’s simply too telegraphed to the audience. After this change in direction the ride gets a lot better and sets in motion some ongoing macguffins with the promise of answering a rather pressing one in the following book.

needless to say I still had my fun and enjoyed learning about Crusher’s backstory/arc, but I felt the story pretty much told itself. the introduction of his world could have been better explored especially with the well thought out characters the salt took time to craft. I’ll have my chroot ready for the next one
