Truly, this is the best fantasy novel I’ve heard in a while. Will Wight’s mastery at storytelling is awe invoking and Travis Baldree’s superb performance quite simply adds to the listening pleasure of the story. The author spends an ample amount of time in world building but it’s his ability to craft wonderfully interesting characters and situational encounters that is amazing. Initially I had thought that the saga unfolded like an onion where each layer gets closer to the center but now realize that, in fact, it’s like consuming a melon, where one starts in the middle and works it way outward.
The cast of important characters are numerous and varied, including a capricious underlord, an insanely driven unsouled, a no-nonsense young woman warrior, a whimsical sprite to a newly introduced somewhat zany and unpredictable young woman who travels by riding her staff somewhat like a witch.
