When I read the first book I thought, “This cat is giving Jim Butcher something to sweat over.” After all, when was the last time you saw a new Dresden book? It has been ages, and people like me, people who have an Urban Fantasy niche to fill have started looking elsewhere for our needs. Thankfully, Kit Hallows has stepped up and created a great new character and setting that complete nourishes the Urban Fantasy itch. Talk about fun. The writing is utterly and completely cinematic. It is visual and sweeping, the action makes Michael Bay look like a kid flipping over a couple of hot wheels and matchbox cars, and the story feels like Kubrick sat up for a week smoking crack (in a good way).
Here, Morgan gets to go to a place that is like Mayberry mixed with Innsmouth, and his dark passenger is stressing the hell out. Kinda hard to blend in when everyone sees outsiders as . . . outsiders. As a bonus, we kinda get to see where Morgan came from, what molded him into the man he is today. There is also a neat little dark magic drug ring, and let us not forget that Morgan is looking for some revenge. The story is outstanding, and it is nice to see a non-Dresden character in Urban Fantasy today.
Straight out of Compton’s mouth comes an amazing bit of narration (see what I did there?). He really embodies Rook and plays the man like he was living the adventure rather than reading it. I enjoy his technique, his pacing, and his voice. He is well rounded and knows how to fill your ears with exceptional story telling.
Don’t miss out on an incredible series. I know, only two of these are on audible, but this is shaping up to be a series worthy of admiration and Rook a character worthy of respect. If you haven’t read or listened to the first book go back and take some series ME time to enjoy this from the beginning. Even though I did receive a promo code for this review it in no way influenced my considerations of the material, and in fact, inspired me to be more honest. In fact, getting a code generally makes me harsher as a reviewer as I am more often concerned what someone like Me will decide based on my review.
