Not the cutting social commentary or shock factor of The Boys, maybe more on par with the cartoon Diabolical. (Yes, cartoon, not animation. Let’s admit we damaged adults love our YA fiction because adulting sucks.) The characters somehow balance artfully between corny and palatable. Pulpy fun, does not challenge my brain and that’s great because I dont want it to. Essence of 9 year old boy tastes finessed with adult skill. Well written in spite of the subject matter! Tawdry, gross, immature, hilarious. I don’t like fan fiction, video games or RPGs, and these characters are all but one-dimensional, still I’ve enjoyed the odd Renfaire and I’ve gobbled up my share of endless fantasy book series; for some reason this story is that kind of engrossing. I suspect the author is actually a genius, writing all this on a bet. If you like the idea of heart and morality romping around in a skin-suit of murdered woke culture, read on. I’m buying extra credits because I desperately need to know what the cat and Carl do next.
