I received this audiobook for free in return for an unbiased review. Let’s start with the positives. The narration was EPIC! Jeff Hays, Laurie Winkel, and the rest of the Soundbooth crew did an awesome job on this book. The characterizations were on point, unique, and helped set the scene. The use of multiple narrators did not distract me, and seemed to meld perfectly together. I love this team…great work. It was a enjoyable listen for this fact, if nothing else. As for the story, I liked the premise of the story and the characters were good, but….. This felt like a rich kid gaming, where everything was handed to him with minimal effort. The lack of a solid antagonist and the fact that every NPC gave the guild breaks started to get a bit….unsettling. The lack of true conflict and the chance of loss was a big negative for this listen. Also, the fact that every NPC took what this “kid” said as the most wise words ever spoken grated on my nerves. I would listen to the next book with hopes the author made it a bit more of a challenge for our group of adventures. All in all, I did enjoy this book, but the lack of a nemesis or sense of urgency and/or failure, detracted from what could have been a 5 star novel.
