Okay, I admit to being somewhat skeptical of a litRPG book centered on bugs and lizards but R.P. Jones crafted a story that was both entertaining and nuanced. It falls safely into the YA category but also compelling enough to find acceptance from an adult listening audience. I especially enjoyed the subtle references to movie, historical and mythological characters such as Dr. Moreau, Ovid and Mórrígan. Also, the strategic and non-inundated use of level-stats was very much appreciated.

I really wanted to give the book 5x5s but was disappointed that the author skimped on a more detailed understanding of the primary antagonist, Maxus. While this may be more fully explained in book 2 I felt a bit more should have provided here. Still, I wish there were a way to give a half-star deduction.

Travis Baldree is a wonderfully talented narrator and shines on his performance here.
