The Game You Play surprised me in a good way. After listening to the first book, I wasn’t a huge fan of the hero (Jason), but I hoped for the best and dove in. I have to say that LA Cotton did a very good job redeeming this alpha a-hole. This is an angsty YA/NA romance, so don’t expect rainbows and unicorns. Jason really lives up to his reputation for being a manwhore and world class jerk many times in the book and though I still don’t love him, I do feel like I understand him and his motivations better. I didn’t enjoy all the OW drama and that he still “passed the time” after things had already started with Felicity (even if it wasn’t official and he denied his feelings/the connection). I liked Felicity and that she grew through the course of the book, but I do wish that she would have put her foot down more and not been a complete doormat for Jason.

I understand that this is YA/NA, so miscommunications and misunderstandings are par for the course, but the entire feud with Thatcher and his threats were a bit much. As I did in the first book, I often wondered where the parental supervision was and still feel like having this book series take place in college would have been a better choice. Sarah Puckett and Wen Ross did a wonderful job narrating and I really enjoyed all of the emotion they put into it. Puckett’s performance was especially moving. I’m excited for Asher (and Mya’s!) story next, especially after he was friend zoned by Felicity and his selflessness at the end of the book.
