It’s finally Priest and Mal’s turn at love in this finale to the ‘Hell’s Ankhor’ series. These two have been dancing around each other in the last few books and it’s nice to see them share a happy ending along with the couples that have featured previously. There are still a few bumps in the road before they’re all riding off into the sunset, though.

Both Priest and Mal have been in mourning; Mal since his wife left when Dante was an infant and Priest since the death of Ankh, after being together for decades. With their feelings starting to become more than friendship, they mutually decide to enter a friends-with-benefits arrangement. Again, the relationship grows to a new level, but both men are hesitant to admit they’ve fallen for each other. Will Mal and Priest put past grief behind them for a chance at new love?

Once again, Lyda and Bates write a low-angst love story. Being middle-aged myself, I appreciate when authors focus a romance on characters-of-a-certain-age. Older people can find new love too! The book is really well-written and includes a poignancy that befits the end of a long series. I got a little teary-eyed with the last couple of scenes.

David Allen Vargo narrated the last six books of this series. In each one he delivering a stellar performance. His voice is suited to this style of story, and I enjoyed them all.

Recommended.
