Worth the credit if you like hard sci-fi (no interdimensional unicorns or fairies, just space ships and airlocks.) However, story is thin. Protagonist hates his father and hates being a Marine; longs to be a Navy deck officer. Eventually (and suddenly) comes around to appreciating his mission. Sigh. In the middle of the tale, starting about chapter 20, there is a huge and unnecessary info dump about galactic drug cartels and alien networks complete with differing names. Lasts two or three chapters. BORING! Also, after the story ends, the author has a personal afterword where he explains where he is going with this series of books. I do not care for this and so was turned off. (I prefer authors to be invisible and for books to stand on their own.) If you like hard sci-fi, you should try Planetside by Michael Mammay or Altered Carbon by Richard K. Morgan.
