To start- the production value of this audiobook is EXCELLENT. Honestly that is the only reason I could finish this story. Huge thanks and credit to the voice actor(s) and sound team.
Everything else about this book is bad. The number of positive reviews the title has is baffling to me. Do not waste your money or a credit on this product. I’ll list a couple major issues that might make a difference to you, reader.
1. Power level of the Main Character (MC) is broken. He acquires TONs of abilities in this book, massive amounts of leveling essence so everything can be upgraded easily, and throughout this story there isn’t a single person he runs into that can beat him and the Mimic.
2. The Mimic does all the fighting. He is on his 3rd rebirth and much stronger than mostly any other character in the book. The mimic literally clears the dungeon runs for the MC and supporting elf character, MC only gets involved when there is a boss or mini boss. This just felt like a lazy approach to the story and made me lose interest in the dungeon runs.
3. Morally boring. The bad guys are “BAD GUYS” in this series. They are slavers, traitors, oppressors, etc. there isn’t any sort of complex character arch involved with our story’s villains, or heros for that matter. Nobody is a “good person” driven to evil for the power to do right or anything like that. Bad guys are bad, good guys are good- and that is pretty much as deep as it gets.
4. Lastly this book took a MAJOR step back in the MC’s development regarding being paired with a monster. In the first book the author actually did a good job depicting the graphic horror of the MC eating an adventurers party. The MC had some psychological damage from what he did and what he witnessed. In this book there is none of that. The MC is (after only a week or two) completely fine with eating people. He is never compelled to eat anyone by his mimic half. He only ever eats “bad guys” that the book tries very hard to make clear deserve it. Further when Chester is revealed to someone they seem to immediately accept the new reality without turning on the MC. The mimic is more of an obliging pet in this book that serves as a Swiss Army knife to solve any problem or challenge the author introduces into the story.
The only reason I give this book 2 stars is for the production team and actors. Sorry to see their talented wasted on a book like this.
