At first I was angry with the author. The very idea of a people reviling a child & essentially telling it that it wasn’t worthy of recognition or position in society as if it had committed a horrible crime by being born?!
Though I considered stopping right there, I told myself that surely there is mercy & humanity here somewhere.
I’m so glad that I kept listening. Though most Orientalism bores me with the honorifics, this main character slowly got me to overlook his humiliations & weaknesses for his tenacity, perseverance & cleverness. As the epilogue claims, everybody roots for the underdog & if you listen to this story, so will you. Take my word for it, keep listening.
